Soils of the Bluegrass and Nashville Basin

The soils of the Bluegrass and Nashville Basin are alfisols (alfi=aluminum and iron, sol=soil) are rich, well-developed soils that were created in part by hardwood forests. Alfisols are richer than the ultisols of the Appalachian forests. Formed over limestone, they are rich in phosphorus, have a neutral pH and are highly fertile. The soils drain rapidly after precipitation and are droughty because of the karst topography.
